Journeys Through Art
presents
"The Atelier of the South"

5 Days in Nice - Côte d'Azur
From 17 to 21 May 2027

In spring 2027, we will set out on an art journey along the French Riviera, travelling through Nice, Saint-Paul-de-Vence, Vence, Antibes, Vallauris, Le Cannet, Cannes and Grasse.

This journey is for those seeking more than a beautiful holiday: a chance to understand the places we visit, and to discover how the landscape, light, sea and everyday life of southern France transformed the work of some of the twentieth century’s greatest artists.

We will explore the Riviera through the eyes of Matisse, Chagall, Picasso, Bonnard and others. We will visit museums, artists’ homes, villages, harbours, a chapel and markets—places where art was part of life and grew out of encounters with it.

We will see how the same landscape takes on a different meaning for each artist: how light becomes colour, how a window becomes a space for painting, and how the sea and its surroundings become memory, freedom, movement and story.

No prior knowledge of art is needed. All you need is curiosity, a love of beauty and a desire to discover a place in depth.

The journey is led by artist Judith Anis. Born in France, she knows the region through both personal memory and an artist’s eye. She brings together its places, its art and the stories behind them.

This is more than another trip to the French Riviera. It is an invitation to slow down, look closely, understand—and see a familiar place with new eyes.

“I must be so deeply immersed in my subject, so steeped in it, that I can draw it with my eyes closed. […] It comes out of me naturally, and then the sign itself becomes noble. […] My work consists in absorbing things. […] At a certain point, it is no longer me; it is a revelation: all I have to do is surrender to it.”
